Police Officer Killed After Being Run Over During Stop-and-Search in Lagos

A 20-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, has allegedly killed a police Sergeant, Johnson Okediji, during a stop-and-search operation along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed the tragic incident during a press briefing detailing the Command's activities for the month of September. According to CP Fatai, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
How the Incident Happened
CP Fatai explained that police officers on duty had signaled a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX, driven by Olusola, to pull over for a routine check.
While the driver initially complied and came to a stop, he suddenly accelerated and sped off just as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver's side of the vehicle.
The police boss stated that the suspect knocked down Sergeant Okediji and dragged him underneath the vehicle for several meters, despite desperate attempts by both fellow officers and passersby to force him to a halt.
Arrest and Death of the Officer
The driver was subsequently chased and apprehended by the team. However, Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries from the assault.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
"His remains have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered and taken to the station," CP Fatai added.
Suspect Claims Brake Failure
Speaking briefly with journalists during his parade at the Command headquarters, the driver, Olusola, denied intentionally hitting the officer. He blamed the incident entirely on a mechanical fault.
"I did not kill the policeman intentionally; it was due to the vehicle's brake failure," Olusola claimed.
